I love this article — and I know what you went through as well as what Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is facing. In one of my corporate jobs, I had just finished closing a deal that I was VERY proud of; however, my manager had something else on his mind. Even though I had just scored a big win for my team, he called me into his office to tell me that he thought that I might want to rethink my hair color (I was very blonde at the time) and that it would probably be wise not to wear such a colorful scarf with my suit next time (it was red). As one of the only women on my team, he simply NEEDED to take the wind out of my sails (I had refused his help on the deal). I wish I could say that I had a witty comeback too, but nope, my 28-year-old self took it. Two years later, I said screw it and started my own company. No one has ever talked to me about what I’m wearing since then. It’s been 10 years.
